Regenerative Therapies

A new generation of therapy

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and Stem Cell Therapy

Since 2016 we have been offering V-Pet Platelet Rich Plasma therapy as part of the treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs.

The technique is carried out under a single anaesthetic, where a volume of blood is taken from the pet and filtered to concentrate platelets (PLT), white blood cells (WBC – some of which are stem cells), and their associated growth factors for use as a cell therapy.  After filtration the platelet-rich-plasma fraction is injected directly into the affected joints, and is safer and more effective than traditional steroid/cortisone injections.  In effect we are using the pet’s own natural anti-inflammatories to reduce inflammation and promote healing in a diseased joint.

It is a natural and safe therapy to relieve the pain of joint disease or injury, promote healing and reduce recovery time after injury or inflammation.  Although the treament can be used in tendon and ligament injuries, most of the cases we use it on are suffering from osteoarthritis.

Each treatment can give a reduction in pain for 6-12+ months, and multiple joints can be treated under the same anaesthetic.  In some cases we have been able to bring patients off pain-killers, or avoid their use in the first place.

We also offer Adishot stem cell therapy, which has similar (though potentially longer lasting) effects.  Stem cell therapy involves surgically removing a small piece of fat (usually from your dog’s groin or abdomen), which is sent away to a laboratory to be grown into stem cells.  The stem cells are delivered back to us on dry ice about 2 weeks later.  We then inject these back into your dog’s joint under a second anaesthetic or deep sedation.
