Our Small Animal Vet team (that's vets to small animals.....not all small vets!)

We thought we would take the time to introduce you to our current team of small animal vets.  Due to COVID we have had to make changes to our vets’ rotas and locations, to safeguard the health of our own team members, and the communities in which we serve. To make this happen we have had to introduce some new faces, although many of them should be familiar by now.

Based in our Haverfordwest surgery are:

Alice Richards (Neal) BVM BVS MRCVS, who will be well known to many of you, as she has been with us for 7 years.  Alice’s calm and caring approach ensures her patients are equally calm, which is so important whilst we have to to work behind closed doors, and examine pets without owners being present.

Dr Leslie-Anne Harvey MA VetMB MRCVS joined us in November 2019, bringing with her a wealth of experience and compassion in her approach.  Leslie-Anne has a broad experience, and is particularly great with end-of-life care, geriatric patients, medical work-ups and also backyard poultry.

Gabrielle Bisschops BVSc MRCVS is our New Zealand locum, who worked with us earlier in the year, and has returned for a longer stint.  Gabrielle is a great all-rounder, enjoying surgery, and we are delighted she is back working with us for the summer.

Dr Jess Galloway BVetMed MRCVS has returned from travelling to help us out for the summer too.  Jess will be familiar to many of you, as she worked for us through 2016, before marrying and relocating.  Jess has a thorough and logical clinical approach, and is great at problem-solving.  Husband Joel has joined our farm animal team, and it is great to have them back in Pembrokeshire.

Emma James BVetMed MRCVS is currently on maternity leave, but we look forward to welcoming her back onto the team in late summer / autumn.

In Fishguard we have:

Kath Sutton BVSc MRCVS, familiar to many having been with us since 2003, and previously with Care and Sutton.  Kath always brings great energy to her work, and has recently joined Faye and Caroline in our list of veterinary acupuncturists.  Well known around the St Davids peninsula, Kath is currently working every morning (except Wednesdays), consulting from the Feidr Castell site.

Faye Richards BVM&S MRCVS has been working from our Fishguard surgery for the last 2 years, returning to us after a previous stint as a locum.  Faye has an interest in mobility, rehabilitation therapy and acupuncture, which works brilliantly alongside our hydrotherapy service.

Directors Leighton Richards BVSc DVA MRCVS and Caroline Gardner BVSc CertSAS MRCVS are available on limited days only.  COVID has brought many challenges to us as a privately owned business, so much of the directors’ time is currently spent keeping up-to-date with government guidelines, investigating and introducing suitable protocols, and maintaining the highest possible safety level for team members, whilst managing the clinical service following guidance from our professional bodies.

Due to these commitments it may not be possible to see the directors at short notice, so we have made sure we have compiled this great team of highly experienced, down-to-earth, caring and compassionate vets to look after your pets.

As lockdown gradually lifts, and we offer more services we are finding ourselves increasingly busy.  We keep a certain number of appointments free every day for urgent cases, but the result is that less urgent cases may have to be booked in a week or two in advance, so it is really helpful if you book in as early as possible, to avoid the daily ‘squeeze’.  This allows us to prioritise the urgent cases, and reduces the risk of our appointment list becoming overwhelmed, and our car park from becoming too full (so we can maintain social distancing outside too).

We continue to offer telephone appointments for those cases where it is appropriate, such as minor wounds and ailments, and patient care reviews.  There is a charge for phone consultations, as our team use their professional skills and time to discuss and prescribe the necessary medications.  If you wish to avoid unnecessary journeys, this may be a good option for you.

We are starting to work through our list of due vaccinations, to get as many of them booked in before they go overdue.  Please be aware that you may still receive reminders, even if your appointment has been booked.  As these are automatically generated, they may continue until the next vaccine has been performed, but our client care team are working hard to reduce the extra reminders.

Our core team have been working throughout the lockdown period, as keyworkers providing emergency and urgent care, for the relief of pain and suffering in Pembrokeshire’s pets.  We have continued to provide veterinary cover 24/7 through our own emergency out-of-hours service, as well as through the day shifts.  All of our team have adapted fantastically to our new working arrangements, and we thank them for their hard work and ability to rise to the challenge, and you, our clients, for your patience as we navigate our practice through these turbulent waters.
